Two years in, the shop was packed. Bags on the table, three raffle winners, cold drinks from Onyx, and a round at Threes to close it out.

Saturday was packed. From the members' meetup in the morning to lunch at Threes and the open house that ran into the evening, the shop was full of familiar faces and new ones. Thank you for showing up for our second anniversary.

The turnout

Why we do this

We started Carry Club as a simple excuse for people who love carry to come together, hang out and just talk. No pitch, no pressure. Just be ourselves and have a good time, in person. That's rare these days.

It's been growing steadily, and it's so much fun to see the regulars alongside new faces. We even had a couple of people come in from New Jersey, which is always an honor to hear. A few familiar faces were missing too, mostly because they've moved further away. If that's you: you're always welcome back with open arms.

Honestly, the day was so hectic I never got a chance to step back and take it in. Looking at the photos afterwards, it was humbling. There were times I didn't feel worthy of offering a space like this, or qualified to. But at the end of the day, I think it's OK not to be. What matters is the people, the fun, and the conversations we have with each other.

Carry Club

Bags on the table

The best part of any Carry Club is what people bring. Daily setups, travel kits, slings clipped with carabiners and keychains, Dyneema pouches, and packs that have clearly been everywhere, with the patches to prove it. Every bag had a story, and most of them got told.

One thing I didn't expect to learn about: bike helmets. I'd assumed there wasn't much innovation in that space, but hearing how the cyclists in the room pick theirs, and the clever designs they've found, proved me wrong.

A personal highlight: H3 Carry Solutions came by in person to show off their bags, and they were really cool. Lots of color, unique hardware choices, and a lot of thought in how each bag is built. He's a great guy, and we're looking forward to working with him down the line.

The raffle

Three winners

At 12:50, we drew the raffle. Entry was free for everyone who RSVP'd to the meetup, with one catch: you had to be in the room to win. I'll admit I'm not the best at this sort of thing, so it was a little awkward, but mostly it was excitement and joy. We celebrate each other's wins. Mostly.

The winners
1st · Jeff Minus-8 Diver GMT
2nd · Tyler Prototype Onigiri pouch in Dyneema, Medium. A one-off.
3rd · David The anniversary patch bundle

Tyler's prize has a story. Dan sent the prototype over right before he headed off on vacation. When we went over it with the team, we realized the pouch needed to be smaller for the patches to work with it, and the smaller size looked more like a real onigiri anyway. So the one and only Medium went into the raffle instead.

Around the shop

Patches, pouches and watches

The two new UrbanCred × SAMPLE patches made their debut, and this time we did something on purpose. We hear a lot about scarcity, and how hard it is to get “limited edition” drops. We've been on the receiving end of missing out too. So we made more patches than we think we'll sell, so that anyone who couldn't make it, or needs a little time to save up, still gets a chance.

The pouches were a different story. They cost a lot more to make, and we didn't have the budget to go all in, so we made as many as we could afford. We are a small, small shop, after all.

The Minus-8 case drew people back all afternoon. Everyone liked the look and styling, and the heft and feel of the watches in hand. If you missed them, they're on display at the shop through November 24.

And thank you to Onyx Coffee Lab for sponsoring the drinks. Their canned coffees kept everyone going from the meetup through the open house.

After

A round at Threes

After the meetup, a few of us headed over to Threes Brewing on Franklin St for lunch and a beer. We talked about everything and nothing at the same time. Just a chill time with good people.

Year three

What's next for Carry Club

Next year, I'd love to make it even more fun. Simple party games, working with a drink maker, maybe even a DJ. And depending on the collab, something themed to show it off. I kind of wish I'd done a bento box display for this year's patches and pouch, but it is what it is. Now it's on the list.

Thank you

To everyone who came

Thank you to Minus-8 for sponsoring the event, to Dan at SAMPLE for working with us on the patches and the pouch, to Onyx for the drinks, and to Threes for having us after. To Gordon, Frank and Daryl for running the floor. And to everyone who came out to celebrate with us.

To everyone who couldn't make it, or lives somewhere much farther away: you're in our hearts, whether you're in this city or the next.

Next up: the Able Carry Archive Sale, in store only, Saturday and Sunday, November 7 and 8. We'll announce more details next week, so keep an eye on the Dispatch and our Discord.
